We are a member of BWBR’s Architect/Engineer (A/E) team working with the Minnesota Department of Human Services to design and construct a new 24-bed secure patient admissions unit, construct a new 80-bed residential space for transition program patients, and construct additional residential program and administrative space. This work will be constructed in two separate phases.

A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) and an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) were also provided by us for this project to determine if there would be any significant environmental effects as a result of this project. This process assisted the site layout process by confirming the least impactful alternate.

Our civil scope of services on the A/E team included site grading, storm water management, sanitary sewer service, water supply, and vehicle access drives. The campus required rehabilitation of its aging steam, sewer, and water utility infrastructures. Due to the condition of the patients any disruption of service was not permitted because facilities were occupied and secure. Providing alternate routes for continuous vehicle access for employees, loading, and deliveries for both the Security Hospital and the Forensic Nursing Home was needed throughout the duration of the project. Security measures for both patient protection and the protection of the neighboring community influenced exterior design elements as much as the interior. Design also included coordination of soil boring locations and geotechnical evaluations; pavement designs and coordination with the overall hospital campus storm water management plan.
